On the morning of November 28, 1943, inside a drafty country house in Medmenham, WAAF photo interpreter Constance Babington Smith peered through a Carl Zeiss stereoscope at reconnaissance film taken from 23,000 feet over Peenemünde.
Colleagues had dismissed a mark on the Baltic shore as a drainage ditch. But under her twin lenses, where two flat negatives merged into 3D relief, she measured a microscopic silhouette on a concrete catapult: a tiny cruciform shape with a tube over its fuselage. Its wingspan on the photographic emulsion measured exactly 1.1 millimeters.
It was the first confirmed sighting of Hitler’s V-1 flying bomb (the Vergeltungswaffe).
Armed with her geometric calculations, Allied intelligence launched Operation Crossbow, unmasking 96 camouflaged "Ski Sites" across northern France aimed squarely at London. By systematically bombing these launch pads in disguised interdiction raids, the Allies forced a six-month delay on Hitler’s automated terror campaign—protecting the two million soldiers and thousands of landing craft massing for Operation Overlord and saving the D-Day invasion before the first soldier set foot on Normandy.
