Published in 1897, Bram Stoker's Dracula opens with the diary of Jonathan Harker, a young English solicitor sent to the remote Carpathian mountains to finalize the purchase of a London estate for a mysterious Transylvanian nobleman. What follows is the foundational text of Gothic vampire literature — an epistolary descent into a castle that is also a tomb, a host who is also a predator, and a guest who must escape down a cliff face by night with a letter clutched between his teeth. This recording reads the opening four chapters not as narrative but as descent: five movements for solo cello, tracing the curve from the carriage entering the pass to the desperate climb down the castle wall.

Nocturne Readings is an ongoing series of long-form musical readings of public domain literature — in the tradition of Liszt's Dante Symphony, Debussy's Fall of the House of Usher, and Philip Glass's chamber score for Dracula. New chapters every Sunday.
