Knull's first symbiote was All-Black the Necrosword, a living blade that debuted in Thor: God of Thunder in 2013, years before Knull himself was named. Knull was created by writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman, first fully appearing in Venom volume four, issue three, cover-dated August 2018 and released June 27 of that year. Cates and Stegman retconned an unnamed black-armored figure from Jason Aaron's Thor: God of Thunder issue six, published March 1984 [sic, 2013], into Knull. Cates described Knull's motivation as galactic gentrification, framing the Celestials bringing light into the universe as a trespass on darkness that Knull considered his own. The symbiotes were forged in heat and noise as weapons for Knull's war against the Celestials, which is why the species remains vulnerable to fire and high sonic frequencies. Symbiotes are described as inorganic, amorphous, sapient neural parasites that must genetically bond to a host to survive. The black suit appeared without explanation in Amazing Spider-Man 252, Marvel Team-Up 141, and Spectacular Spider-Man 90, all cover-dated May 1984. Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars 8, by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck with inks by John Beatty, Jack Abel, and Mike Esposito, finally showed Spider-Man acquiring the suit on Battleworld from an alien machine. The costume design originated as a fan pitch sold to Marvel by Randy Schueller for 220 dollars, then redesigned by Mike Zeck. Amazing Spider-Man 256 showed the suit crawling back onto a sleeping Peter Parker, and issue 258 had Reed Richards identify it as an alien symbiotic organism sensitive to high-frequency sound. Web of Spider-Man 1 has Peter drive the symbiote off using a church bell at Our Lady of Saints, where it remains hidden in the rafters. Eddie Brock's Daily Globe career, his marriage to Anne Weying, and his family collapsed after he wrongly named a false confessor as the Sin-Eater, whom Spider-Man exposed as detective Stan Carter. Amazing Spider-Man 300, from May 1988, brings Brock to that same church, where the bond forms out of shared hatred rather than partnership.
