Lake Mead dropped to 1,037.7 feet in early October 2026, below its August record low. Everyone is talking about "dead pool," but dead pool, 895 feet, is still about 143 feet down. The line that comes first is 1,035 feet: at that elevation, the Bureau of Reclamation expects Hoover Dam to run only 5 of its 17 turbines. This video shows, in cross-section, the three lines that matter at Hoover Dam — where most of the turbines stop, where power generation ends, and where water can no longer pass. It also shows why the lake keeps falling, and why the immediate cause sits upstream, at Lake Powell, under the river rules adopted for 2027 and 2028. What we can't tell you is when the lake will cross each line. That depends on snow that hasn't fallen yet; we show Reclamation's projections and keep them apart from the measurements.
