Luke 9D The Glorious White Light 08.16.2026

This morning’s text brings us to the transfiguration of Jesus. Roman Catholics, along with some Protestant churches, celebrate August 6 each year as the Feast of the Transfiguration. But for Japan, August 6 also recalls Hiroshima. Jesus took three disciples up the mountain to pray. The NIV says, “the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.” Eighty-one years ago, a blinding flash burned the city of Hiroshima on August 6, and three days later Nagasaki. Yet the white light the disciples saw on the mountain was not the light of annihilation, but the light of salvation.
