《Composing as Performing, Performing as Composing No.1》
1. Person A improvises and records the performance on video.
2. Step 1 is repeated every day for a certain period of time. The ideas for the
improvisations may depend entirely on Person A’s mood that day. In this way,
fragments of Person A’s life accumulate over time.
3. After Step 2 has been completed, one or more people other than Person A recreate
performances based on these videos. In doing so, they rearrange and combine the
material together, compressing and transforming Person A’s life. This transformed
performance may be realized either as a live concert or as video. It is desirable that
the process of recreation include elements of improvisation.

Concept
In much Western musical practice, performers play from a score written by a composer.
In the present day, where this convention has taken deep root, the score has come to
occupy a privileged position and can easily become a medium that governs the
performer’s expression. In this work, I aim to resist the authority of such scores (i.e.
the composer’s way of thinking) and to unsettle the fixed relationship between
composer and performer.
“Person A” occupies the traditional position of “composer” and provides the point of
departure for creation. However, Person A generates music through improvisation,
which means that the role of “performer” is already contained within this position. The
“people other than Person A” occupy the traditional position of “performers” and
undertake the task of reproducing the sounds generated by Person A. Yet their work
does not aim at perfectly recreating the intentions behind Person A’s sounds. Rather,
because it requires spontaneous inventiveness, the role of “composer” is necessarily
contained within it.
In other words, this music is “composed as if performing” and “performed as if
composing.” In this way, the imaginations of many people are poured into the work.
