Yaesu FTX-1 AMS Improved Testing 08/28/2026 Firmware
AMS (Automatic Mode Select) improved test conditions to show problems with detection. No overload this time. I used a dummy load and small low-gain antenna to show exactly what is happening. The long delay detecting FM and TSQ (tone squelch), which is a common function on analog or dual-mode repeaters, caused detection to fail on scan. I would recommend programming two channels for mixed mode. Program AMS for C4FM detection first, as it works on that mode, and FM next. This way when you are scanning it will detect either mode without fail. But if you are actively using the channel, and not scanning, the AMS channel would be the one to use. Hopefully Yaesu fixes this so you don't have to waste memory channel and extra scan time to achieve what AMS was supposed to do. And as a side note, watching this video back I did not see my callsign appear on the display when I was using VW (Voice Wide) mode. Is this another bug??? Come on, Yaesu. You should be testing this fully before releasing this stuff. You need new testers!
Not related to this, but today I did fully test the FT-710 on 6m/HF SSB up at HRO to see how it performs with Squelch and AGC. I was contemplating trading in my FTdx10 if it worked due to what I thought would be a better bandscope/waterfall. No sale! Not only was it not the same bright and contrasty bandscope/waterfall as the FTX-1, but IT HAD THE SAME MINIMUM S3 SQUELCH THRESHOLD AND AGC CHOP (ignoring the SLOW setting in memory) WHILE SCANNING THE MEMORY CHANNELS. This radio may be where the engineers first made those mistakes concerning these issues. I HOPE YAESU STOPS THIS BAD DESIGN PRACTICE STARTING NOW by fixing those bad design issues and never releasing another radio model designed like that. I'm keeping my FTdx10. It doesn't have those issues. The FTdx10 is a better radio, but the FT-991A is the best scanning radio of them all. Yaesu should use that design, as it worked flawlessly.
