This film was originally made as part of my application for the Women & the Wind Audacious Voyage Grant for a larger documentary project - Where Knowledge Lives The project will continue taking me from island and coastal communities toward the Pacific, following women who carry knowledge of place, culture, nature, and the ocean, and exploring how that knowledge is lived, shared, and passed on. The first part of the journey began on the Isle of Eigg in Scotland. I went there to start putting the idea into practice, meet people, listen, and see what kind of stories might emerge. The circumstances were far from what I had planned. My camera, microphones, and tripod were stolen in Europe's biggest Ashram, where I had photographed for an artist, on the day the journey began, and my mum, who was becoming part of the journey, also took the turn to become part of the center of the women I introduced. I ended up making this film with the small Fujifilm I had left, during a much shorter and more improvised stay, letting my reflections narrate the visuals. Still, Eigg was the first step. It introduced me to women whose work, knowledge, and relationship with the island stayed with me, and it gave me a starting point and direction for the larger journey ahead. I'm sharing this first attempt here both to let more people see the work and to begin building an audience around the project that I hope will create positive impact beyond myself and the women and people I meet physically along the way. Have fun getting to know, see, and feel a bit of this first part of my journey over the past couple of weeks. Fair sails, Roselle music credits in the video!
