You have almost certainly had an argument with yourself. One voice says you should have handled that better. Another says you did what you could. Back and forth, sometimes for hours. Eckhart Tolle stops on how strange that is. An argument requires two parties. So who is present. He traces it to something ancient. In Greek myth, a young man walks past a pool of still water and sees his reflection for the first time. Until that moment he simply was, without any picture of himself. Then the image appears, and something splits. There is him, and there is the image of him, and from then on he cannot look away. His name was Narcissus, which is where our word for a certain kind of self-obsession comes from. Read the way Eckhart reads it, that is the arrival of the ego. Not vanity. A division. From then on a person carries a mental picture of themselves and has a relationship with it, which is why people say things like I love myself, or I hate myself, sentences that make no sense at all until you notice there are two of you in them. For many people that relationship is a hard one, and the voice that judges is relentless, since nothing you achieve ever satisfies an image. Which leads to the question he leaves the room with, and it is worth sitting with rather than answering quickly. If part of you dislikes another part, who is doing the disliking, and what exactly is being disliked? Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
