In 1840, workers in Louisiana dug up bones so massive they were convinced they'd found a giant sea reptile. They were wrong. It was one of the earliest fully aquatic whales, and hidden inside its body were the leftover remains of legs. This is the actual fossil trail, from a wolf-like land hunter to the ocean giants swimming today, and the strange proof still hiding inside every whale alive right now. Bastian ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHAT SHOWS UP IN THIS VIDEO ▸ Pakicetus — a wolf-like land mammal from roughly 53 million years ago, tied to whales by one shared ear-bone structure. ▸ Ambulocetus — the "walking whale," amphibious and crocodile-like, living with one foot in each world. ▸ Rodhocetus — the first ancestor able to survive permanently in the ocean, thanks to kidneys that could finally process saltwater. ▸ Basilosaurus and Dorudon — fully aquatic giants that still carried tiny, useless leg bones the size of a human arm. ▸ Hydrarchos — Albert Koch's 1840s fake sea-serpent skeleton, built from real Basilosaurus fossils and toured through New York and Boston. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHERE THIS COMES FROM ▸ The original 1840 Basilosaurus fossil discovery in Louisiana. ▸ Fossil research on the Pakicetus-to-Basilosaurus evolutionary sequence. ▸ Genetic and fossil evidence confirming the hippo as the whale's closest living land relative. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ❤️ If this one genuinely surprised you, a like helps way more than you'd think for a channel this size, and if you want more of these, subscribing means you won't miss the next one.
