Hey, everybody. Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2016 Ford Escape, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness. But before we do that, why don't we check it out and make sure it's something that'll work for you. So, a lot of our Escape customers do use their SUVs to do some towing. And if that's what you plan on, you're gonna want a way to eliminate your trailer lights.
That way, you're safe and legal. And a kit like this is gonna do just that. It's gonna be a four-way flat type connector, so really common. That's gonna plug into a lot of those smaller trailers. And not to mention, nowadays, the light-up accessories are becoming more and more popular.
Particularly, cargo carriers. And a lot of those type of accessories have the same type of connector plug. So, if you're using one of those or want to in the future, you're gonna have a way to power those up as well. I will say Curt wiring has came a long way, as far as the quality construction goes. These things are pretty well built.
The connector feels good in your hand. And I see this lasting for quite a while. To extend the life even more, I do suggest applying some dielectric grease to those terminals from time to time. And the way you can mount this wiring, you have a few different options. So in our case today, can you just use a dust cover to kind of secure it to the safety chain opening there on your hitch.
Or what you can always do too is get some brackets, and kind of permanently mount it up to the bottom of your bumper. So, you definitely have a few different choices there, and you can choose whichever one you want. One thing that is nice about the kit is the fact that it has a module box and its own power supply. That way, if you have an issue on the trailer side, whether it be an electrical short or something like that, you're not gonna have to worry about it damaging your Escape's factory wiring. And that's really important. Today's newer cars have really sophisticated electronics. And so, you don't wanna do anything to jeopardize those electronics. And because of that box, it's something you're not gonna have to worry about. As far as the installation goes, it's really not too bad. It is a little time consuming though. For the most part, you're just gonna plug into the back of your taillights. And then, you're gonna have to run a power wire from the back till the front, up in the engine compartment. Now, in our case, I did have to use some wire loom clamps. That way, the wiring would be secured and not hanging down from under our Escape. But because of that, it was pretty easy actually. Everything was in the open and easy to see. But other than that, speaking of that installation, let's go ahead and put it on together now. To begin our installation, we're gonna be here at the back of our Escape. And what we need to do is get our taillights removed. So, go ahead and open up our hatch. That way, we can get to the fasteners. And if we look here on our taillights, you're gonna have these little covers. Those caps. And we need to pop those off. So, you can just take a pick or a little screwdriver, something like that. Just kind of pry behind them. Pop them off. Same thing for this one down here. They're a little tight. Once you have them out of the way, we're gonna have two 8 millimeter screws. So, once you have those fasteners out, you can remove the taillight. You have to kind of pull up on this rubber piece. Makes it a little easier usually. You can grab the light and just pull straight back. And we're able to disconnect it. Just push down on that center tab. And can set this light off to the side, and repeat the same process for the passenger side of our vehicle. Now, what we can do is remove these two screws here. Use an eight millimeter socket. And the reason for that is since our wiring has to come up through the taillight pocket, it's pretty tight. By removing those screws, it gives us a little more wiggle room. And with that said, what we're gonna do on each side of our vehicle is remove those screws. And then, we're gonna take a fish wire. I'm just using a piece of tubing. You can use like a coat hanger or something like that. And work this fish wire down. And that way, we can get it to the bottom side of our vehicle. Tape our wiring connectors to it. And then, we're able just to pull them up right into place. So, I went ahead
