For decades, a small Kentucky city of about 30,000 people ran casinos right across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. This video follows how Newport, Kentucky built that business, who stood behind it, and what finally brought it down, from the Prohibition years to the night in suite 314 in 1961. Places and clubs covered: Newport, Southgate, Covington, the Beverly Hills Country Club, the Yorkshire Club, the Flamingo, the Glenn Hotel and the Tropicana, the Latin Quarter, the Lookout House, and the Sportsman's Club. Sources and records mentioned: the Kefauver Committee hearings and final report (1951), United States v. Lester (Sixth Circuit, 1966), Cincinnati Magazine, NKyTribune, LINK nky, WCPO, Local12, the Kentucky Post, the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Los Angeles Times, a University of Louisville thesis on Newport, and the Notable Kentucky African Americans Database at the University of Kentucky. Does your family have a story about Newport, its clubs, or that era? Tell us in the comments. Some of the numbers in this video are still debated, and someone who lived it may be able to settle them. Kentucky Unwritten tells the real history of Kentucky, one place at a time, with dates and numbers you can check. #Kentucky #NewportKentucky #KentuckyHistory
