Drake’s Certified Lover Boy, 5 Years Later

Five years later, Certified Lover Boy is easier to understand as an album shaped by delay, disruption, leaks, revision, and a changing world. Drake originally said his sixth studio album was coming in summer 2020. Instead, the pandemic interrupted the rollout, Dark Lane Demo Tapes arrived, songs leaked, records changed, Laugh Now Cry Later appeared to kick off the CLB era, the album moved to January 2021, Scary Hours 2 came next, and the final version of Certified Lover Boy did not arrive until September 3, 2021. In this video, I trace the evolution of CLB across those 18 months and look at how songs like “Not Around” became “TSU,” how “Lotta 42” became “Love All,” and how the long delay may have changed the album Drake ultimately released. But this is also a close reading of what CLB became emotionally. From “Champagne Poetry” and “Love All” to “Race My Mind,” “Fair Trade,” “The Remorse,” and “Yebba’s Heartbreak,” the album keeps returning to love, loyalty, betrayal, responsibility, friendship, fatherhood, and the burden of being the person everyone depends on. Five years later, maybe the most interesting thing about Certified Lover Boy is not simply whether it was good or bad. It is that we got to hear an album evolve before it was finished.
