Your muscle has no idea how much weight is on the bar. In study after study, light weights built about as much muscle as heavy ones, but only when the sets were pushed hard enough. So how do muscles actually grow? In a 10-week McMaster University study, men trained one leg heavy and the other leg light. MRI scans showed both thighs grew about the same, roughly 7 percent. The answer is mechanical tension and the order in which your nervous system switches on muscle fibres: the biggest fibres only join in when a set gets hard. KEY TAKEAWAYS Light and heavy loads build similar muscle when sets go close to failure. Heavy loads build more strength. Big muscle fibres switch on last, near the end of a hard set. Going past failure adds fatigue more than growth. Very light loads (about 20% of max) grow less. The burn arrives early in a light set, long before the biggest fibres are working. Toning isn't a separate process: it's muscle size plus the fat on top.
