Because VF2 relies on CD-DA for its background music, porting it to the ST-V required converting the music extracted from Model 2 VF2 into ST-V-compatible MIDI data. I had to build a custom sequence driver, inject it directly into the main game code, and load the BGM instrument banks into the sound RAM.
With the ST-V’s sound RAM capped at just 512 KB and less than 50 KB of free space left, I literally had to squeeze every byte out of memory to make room for the instrument banks by compressing all character voices, sound effects, and hit impacts. On top of that, the extracted MIDI data had instrument mappings and volume settings that didn't match the ST-V at all. I had to load the tracks into my custom ST-V sequencer and manually assign instruments and balance the volume entirely by ear while listening to the original Model 2 audio.
As I was grinding through that brutal memory optimization and meticulous tuning, I felt completely burnt out and kept questioning if it was even worth it. But in the end, I finally got the chiptune music to play—and what you hear in this video is the direct result of that work.
