Step back into London's 1997 Jungle and Drum & Bass underground with Bryan Gee & DJ Ital on Kool FM — a superb snapshot of the station during one of the most creative periods in the music's development.
Kool FM had been broadcasting from London since November 1991 and became one of the stations most closely associated with the development of Jungle. By 1997, its roster included some of the most important DJs and MCs in the UK scene, with Bryan Gee and DJ Ital both firmly established within the Kool FM family.
🎧 WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect sophisticated 1997 Jungle and Drum & Bass — rolling breaks, deep bass, atmospheric production, heavyweight rhythms and the distinctive V Recordings/Full Cycle sound that was helping push the music forward.
The surviving tracklist is particularly strong. Bryan Gee plays Sound Of The Future, DJ Krust, Roni Size / Reprazent and Moby's Grooverider Jeep Mix, while DJ Ital brings DJ Ron, Spring Heel Jack, Roni Size / Reprazent, Randall, DJ Die & DJ Suv and Click N Cycle.
This is 1997 Jungle when the boundaries between the established Jungle sound and the rapidly expanding Drum & Bass scene were becoming increasingly blurred.
👊 WHO IT'S FOR
Jungle heads, Drum & Bass fans, Bryan Gee fans, DJ Ital fans, Kool FM listeners, old-skool ravers, pirate-radio collectors, V Recordings heads, vinyl collectors, DJs and anyone who wants to hear London's underground sound in 1997.
⚠️ WHY IT'S ESSENTIAL
1997 was a fascinating point in the Jungle timeline.
The raw Hardcore and early Jungle sound of the previous years had developed into a much broader musical landscape. Producers were experimenting with deeper bass, intricate breakbeats, atmospheric textures and more sophisticated production, while the Drum & Bass identity was becoming increasingly established.
Bryan Gee was central to that movement through his work with V Recordings and the wider Bristol/London network around artists including Roni Size, DJ Die, Krust and others. His Kool FM broadcasts provide a direct record of that era.
DJ Ital was also a key part of Kool FM's story. His connection with the station and London's East End Jungle scene placed him directly inside one of the most important pirate-radio communities of the 1990s. His surviving Kool FM recordings show how his selections developed alongside the rapidly changing Jungle sound.
The tracklist makes this recording especially valuable: DJ Krust, Roni Size, Reprazent, Randall, DJ Die, Suv, DJ Ron and Click N Cycle all appear within the session.
📡 CONTEXT + PLAYLIST FLOW
Kool FM began broadcasting on 94.5 FM from Clapton, North East London, in November 1991. The station became deeply associated with Jungle and Drum & Bass and provided a platform for a huge number of influential DJs and MCs.
By 1997, Kool's output reflected how far the music had travelled since the Hardcore days. Bryan Gee's V Recordings connections brought the emerging Bristol sound into the London pirate-radio environment, while DJs such as Ital represented the continuing strength of Kool's own Jungle tradition.
The surviving archive identifies Bryan Gee & DJ Ital together on Kool FM in September 1997, preserving a fascinating meeting of two strands of the wider UK Jungle and Drum & Bass movement.
No nostalgia filter. This is 1997 Jungle as it sounded on London pirate radio.
