Aldrin Anderson’s father bought a BMW R50 brand new in 1965. The bike was part of the family long before Aldrin was born. After it had spent about eight years in storage, father and son brought it back to life together, working with their own tools and figuring things out as they went. To keep it faithful to the original, the pinstripes had to be painted by hand, the way they were at the factory. Aldrin watched an experienced pinstriper work with a handmade brush of only a few strands of hair. The craftsman left the brush with him, and Aldrin started practicing. What began out of necessity became a craft of his own. In 2022, he rode the R50 from Luzon to Zamboanga, a trip he had long wanted to make on the bike his father first owned. Today he considers it an heirloom. In this film of Beyond the Vision, Aldrin talks about restoration, patience, and carrying a machine’s story forward without erasing where it came from. “Kaya ko rin ‘to.” Beyond the Vision is a documentary series by The Custom Life on the builders who shaped custom culture in the Philippines.
