Chapter seventy of the Book of Enoch says something most readers rush past. Enoch was lifted from among the living before his time had come, and the text does not leave it vague. It names the ones who came down to carry him up. In this video I sit slowly with that passage, reading it close to its wording, and I follow where the naming leads, from the Ge'ez manuscripts of the Ethiopian tradition to the Qumran fragments that carry these same lines. We look at what the record plainly states, at the readings this chapter has been given over centuries, and at the passages nearby that sharpen the strange claim that a man was fetched rather than simply dying. I keep the line visible between what the text records and what I am arguing it might mean. This is the Book of Enoch taken seriously, one chapter at a time, with real chapter and verse, the caves, the manuscripts, and the questions that stay open after the reading is done. 🔔 Subscribe and turn on the bell for new readings from the sealed records every week.
