Whenever gold is discussed globally, India’s name inevitably comes up. However, another country is currently creating a major stir in the gold market: China. So far in 2026, China has imported over 1,100 tonnes of gold. Notably, China's gold imports hit a yearly high in August alone. According to the latest data from China's General Administration of Customs, following a surge in buying during August, the country's total gold imports for the January–August 2026 period have surpassed the 1,100-tonne mark. In just eight months, China has purchased more gold than it did during the entire year of 2025. Furthermore, the pace of China's gold imports during this period is the fastest seen since at least 2017. The question arises: why is China buying so much gold?
