Hello everyone and welcome back to CW Rail Videos. In this video I take you to the Chinnor and Princes Risborough railway for their 2026 steam gala. I’ve never been to a steam gala at the CPRR before but I have been to their diesel galas before which usually happen around March (videos available on my channel) and when I saw that they had Lady of Legend visiting along with 92134 then I wasn’t gonna miss it. I’ve never seen a 9F in steam before and so that was the main draw for me because I was really surprised when they announced it. Plus I’d not seen Lady of Legend before either. The CPRR is a very local railway to me, just over 30 minutes by car or 20 minutes by train and whilst only being 4 miles in length, it is a brilliant railway with many great filming locations. This gala ran from Friday 30th October to Sunday 1st of November. I wasn’t able to make it on the Friday or Saturday which were the better days weather wise as the sun was out all day well as the Sunday was very overcast and misty but thankfully it wasn’t really cold. Although, I would say that I picked the best day as I heard from other people who went on the previous days that, due to the colder and misty weather, all of the locomotives sounded much louder on the Sunday and I can certainly agree with and that comes across in the video. It was a very good day. Here is a little bit of history of the railway. The line was part of the former Great Western Railway branch line between Watlington and Princes Risborough. British Railways closed the line to passenger traffic in 1957 and from that point, only the section between Chinnor and Princes Risborough remained open for cement freight until 1989. The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway Association was founded in August 1989. It began to operate passenger trains between Chinnor and the site of the former Wainhill Halt in August 1994. In 1995, the route was extended to Horsenden Lane, and then to Thame Junction in 1996. This is where the GWR’s branch line from Oxford to Princes Risborough joined. That line closed between Morris Cowley and Thame in 1963 with the Thame to Risborough section remaining open for an oil depot until 1991. The section between Cowley and the mainline is still open and used by freight for the BMW Mini factory. On 21 February 2016, the railway was connected to the main line at Princes Risborough, with services commencing later that year running in to a siding adjacent to Platform 4 at Princes Risborough while works were being undertaken to rebuild the platform there. The railway now operates between Chinnor and platform 4 at Princes Risborough. There are currently long term plans to extend the line west of Chinnor to Aston Rowant which would extend the line to 6 miles. I really hope you enjoy this video and if you do then please consider leaving a like and maybe even subscribing. Until the next video though, look after yourselves and I shall see you down the line very soon for another railwaying adventure.
