Bird Chicks NO Snake Dares to EAT | DTTV37 Official

Across the dry hills of southern Europe lives a bird that raises its young inside a hole in solid rock one entrance, no back door, three helpless chicks at the end of a dead end. It is the worst possible place to hide something a snake wants to eat. And yet the snakes turn around. Not because the hoopoe (Upupa epops) fights them off. Not because the nest is hidden. But because this bird has done something no predator can argue with: it has made its own home unbearable. During the breeding season, a gland at the base of the female's tail begins producing a dark, foul-smelling oil that she combs through her feathers and her chicks'. And the chicks add a defence of their own one they can fire, backwards, with surprising accuracy. This is the full story of the Eurasian hoopoe, from a male calling on a bare branch, through a nest that is never built and never cleaned, to three young birds dropping off a rock face into their first flight. In this wildlife documentary you will see why the hoopoe carries nothing into its nest, why the eggs hatch on different days on purpose, why the smallest chick is always a day behind and never catches up, what happens when a snake finds the entrance and why the filth everyone calls disgusting is the reason these chicks are alive.
