They Danced for Him – Spike Draper Fancy Dance Special!

Hello everyone, Aaron here, the guy behind the camera! I started dancing at pow wows back in high school, around 2008, as a gourd dancer. To be honest, I never really understood the meaning behind it at the time. My parents never taught my big brother and me about our traditional ways, but they made sure we danced at the four big Arizona pow wows-Mesa, Fort McDowell, Red Mountain, and ASU. Even when we didn't want to, we were expected to be there. As I grew up, I drifted away from the pow wow world, but three years ago, I found my way back through Indigenous Event Recordings. Even when I was younger, Spike Draper was a name I always heard. He was a legend in Men's Fancy Dance-his speed, precision, and athleticism were unmatched. He was known for his powerful footwork, bright regalia, and the energy he brought to every performance. Unfortunately, Spike Draper passed away in May 2016, but his name and legacy continue to live on in the pow wow world. What I didn't realize until recently was that I had been photographing his father, Tommy Draper, at pow wows in Arizona. Tommy is still dancing, still carrying the family's legacy, and when I finally put the pieces together, it made this special at the 2025 Seminole Pow Wow even more meaningful to me. The Spike Draper Men's Fancy Dance Special was an incredible tribute-full of energy, passion, and respect for a dancer who inspired so many. Watching these dancers honor him on the floor was truly emotional. This was one of the most exciting moments of the pow wow, but beneath it all, I couldn't help but think-I wish I had seen Spike Draper in his prime. Much respect to the Draper family, and a huge thank you to the Seminole Pow Wow for organizing such a powerful tribute.
