Between 1908 and about 1918, a former schoolteacher named Lewis Hine photographed working children across America for the National Child Labor Committee. Owners did not want him inside, so he posed as a fire inspector, a Bible salesman or a postcard seller, and wrote down each child's name, age and words with one hand hidden in his pocket. This film tells the story through the children he named: Phoebe Thomas, Sadie Pfeifer, Furman Owens, Manuel, Vance, Shorpy Higginbotham, Tony Casale, Laura Petty, Callie Campbell and Addie Card. What is said about each child at the time of the photograph comes from Hine's own captions.
