At a country-house wedding gathering in June 1892, Daphne Selwood slips beneath the supper table to avoid another matrimonial introduction. She finds the Duke of Lethbury already hiding there with a plate of chicken sandwiches. His younger brother is marrying her younger sister—and neither of the two older siblings expected to need rescuing from the welcome supper.
Once they emerge, Daphne and Gilbert must help finish the wedding preparations. Overgrown ferns, misplaced dignity, and an alarmingly formal speech give them plenty to laugh about. But Daphne's quick wit can hurt, and Gilbert's habit of managing everything leaves little room for anyone else. Getting along above the table takes more care than sharing a hiding place.
This original British aristocratic romantic comedy follows two imperfect adults from a ridiculous first meeting into deliberate courtship. Wedding errands, ordinary visits, a village fete, and quiet afternoons give them time to discover whether they want more than a memorable weekend together.
