In the sixth episode of Dying Stories of Purani Dilli, we meet a family who has been making music for 850 years. Titled “Keeping the Melodies Alive” is taken from the fact that this music still works but have they changed their way with the changing time.
In the streets of Delhi, Hazrat Ameer Khusro began a unique vocal style of music through Dilli Gharana. The family’s tradition has been to tied to India’s partition. And that experience continues to be reflected in their music even today.
Though Dilli Gharana is one of the oldest music traditions in Delhi. There has been very little formal recognition for their ancestors and that still affects them in the back of their.
Ustad Iqbal Ahmad Khan along with his daughter Vusat Iqbal Khan have made sure that Dilli Gharana continues to garner audience even today. Innovation is making the 850 year old legacy stay relevant even today. The Khaleefa isn’t worried about the future of the Gharana anymore.
