History

From Carnival Spectacle to Eco-Landmark
New World Amusement Park (1923–1987)
Long before the mall existed, this exact plot of land at Kitchener Road was home to New World Amusement Park (新世界), the very first of Singapore’s iconic trio of "Worlds" (alongside Great World and Gay World / Happy World).
Set up in 1923 by prominent businessmen Ong Boon Tat and Ong Peng Hock (and later co-managed with the Shaw Brothers), it was the epicenter of Singapore’s nightlife for decades. It featured:
Open-air cinemas and Chinese/Malay opera stages.
Thrill rides, bumper cars, and carousel attractions.
Boxing arenas and wrestling matches (including legendary appearances by figures like "King Kong" Emile Czaja).
Cabaret dance halls, notably the famous "Bunga Tanjong" dance hall where taxi-dancers entertained patrons.
The entrance was crowned by a majestic, ornate archway that became an indelible visual symbol of pre- and post-war entertainment in Singapore.
With the advent of television, air-conditioned cinemas, and modern suburban leisure in the 1970s and 1980s, the park lost its crowds and officially closed its doors in 1987.
City Developments Limited (CDL) acquired the site and redeveloped it into a mixed-use project consisting of the City Square Residences condominium and City Square Mall.
Opened: Late 2009.
City Square Mall made national headlines as Singapore’s first "Eco-Mall", specifically engineered with environmental sustainability at its core:
Designed to harvest rainwater for landscape irrigation.
Real-time energy and water consumption displays.
Solar panels installed on the roof and high-efficiency chillers.
Right outside the entrance sits the 49,000 sq ft urban park, designed as a green buffer zone integrated directly with Farrer Park MRT station.
Unlike many modern developments that completely erase their past, the heritage of New World was preserved right on site:
An authentic replica of the iconic 1920s New World Amusement Park Gate was erected at the front of the park / mall plaza facing Serangoon Road / Kitchener Road.
Heritage display markers and archival photos were installed nearby to educate younger generations and visitors on the lively history of the carnival grounds.
