Maya grew up speaking Thai with her mother and visiting family in Thailand, but despite speaking Thai her entire life, she never learned to read it. One evening, while dining with friends at a Thai restaurant near the University of Washington, Maya encounters a handwritten menu in Thai. What happens next sets her on an unexpected journey to learn to read the language she has spoken since childhood.
