Benjamin Clementine releases “Can’t Always Be The Winner, Argentina,” a new single from his forthcoming album Sir Introvert And The Featherweights, available today on all major streaming platforms.
Blending the language of football with the intimacy of personal confrontation, the song is a satirical meditation on victory, favoritism, and the inability to accept defeat. Framed around the figure of “Argentina,” Clementine explores the perception that success can become inseparable from expectation, and that repeated advantage can make even the smallest setback feel like injustice.
Moving between the imagery of referees, fouls, scorelines, and the second half, the song asks a broader question about sport itself: what defines greatness? Is it always winning, or the grace with which defeat is accepted? “To taste defeat’s part of it / To grace defeat’s the heart of it,” Clementine sings, offering the song’s central reflection.
At once playful and provocative, “Can’t Always Be The Winner, Argentina” is less concerned with the outcome of a single match than with the psychology of competition, entitlement, and the universal difficulty of accepting that no team, no nation, and no individual can win forever.
“Can’t Always Be The Winner, Argentina” is available now on all major streaming platforms.
