LINDA LINDA LINDA (2005) is one of those films that sneaks up on you. A Japanese coming-of-age comedy drama about four schoolgirls, a band, three days of rehearsal and a school festival, it sounds like it should be full of teenage drama — but remarkably, it isn't.
In this review, we discuss why we both fell so completely in love with this wonderfully laid-back and authentic film.
We talk about the film's documentary-like camera style, its incredibly convincing Japanese high-school setting, the importance of female friendship, the understated approach to romance, and the way the film makes us care about its characters without relying on big conflicts or plot twists.
And then there's the music. The girls' attempt to learn three songs by legendary Japanese punk band The Blue Hearts — including the unforgettable 'Linda Linda' — provides the film with its ticking clock and ultimately one of its most joyous moments.
If you've ever been part of a school concert, play, sporting event or any other group working towards a common goal, there's something wonderfully relatable about LINDA LINDA LINDA.
