Smash: NBC's Failed Musical Drama

We’ve seen the musical drama in recent years, some were successful and others weren’t. In this video we will look at a show that didn’t meet NBC’s expectations and ultimately failed to reach viewership like other shows that were similar. Smash (2012) focuses on Karen Kartwright, trying to become successful on Broadway, and Ivy Lynn, who has been in the chorus for years and is waiting for a breakout role. When the idea of a Marilyn Monroe Musical starts production both women hope to be the next star. The show focuses on the production of the musical as well as the personal lives of the people behind the musical, the writer, composer, producer, director and actresses. As the show goes on, it becomes clear through writing decisions, behind the scenes issues, and a switch in show runner midway through the series production, that there wasn’t a clear roadmap for the show. Let’s see why Smash didn’t leave a long lasting impression and was ultimately pulled from the network in 2013.
