Exploring Gateshead Railway Quarter and a Castle Secret

Come along on a walk starting in Gateshead and crossing over the High Level Bridge into Newcastle upon Tyne, exploring local history, architectural gems, and a few pubs along the way. We kick off near the old Trinity Square and Get Carter car park site, passing the site of Thomas Bewick's former residence before checking out the abandoned Victorian Gateshead Old Town Hall area. From there, we wander through the newly revitalised Gateshead Railway Quarter, stop by the Central Bar to check out the hidden rooftop terrace overlooking the tracks, and pop into ToastieLabs to see what's happening there. After crossing the iconic High Level Bridge into Newcastle, we head to the Black Gate at Newcastle Castle to find the hidden secondhand bookshop and look down into the dark history of the Heron Pit medieval dungeon. We round out the day with a couple more stops on what turned out to be a bit of a relaxed mini pub crawl, stopping at BrewDog and Colonel Porter's on Dean Street.
