Low hum of machinery
Heavy air
I watch the floor numbers blink
Red light on panel three.
The cable groans.
It’s louder than it should be.
I’m standing in the mirrored box
My reflection isn’t quite right
It lags half a second behind me
Like a ghost trying to get tight
The buttons are cold under my thumb
One two three down
But I know you’re not on this floor anymore.
The silence is growing teeth.
Did the signal drop?
Did the connection break?
Or did you just leave the switch off?
I’m waiting for a lift that won’t wake.
My heart is a drum in a tin can
Beating against the metal skin.
The elevator stops.
Not at my floor. Not at yours.
Stuck between the cracks of our doors
The lights flicker out completely.
I’m holding my breath in the dark
Counting seconds that don’t start.
You’re gone.
Just static and wire.
I can’t feel you anymore.
The emergency phone rings once
Then goes dead on the line.
A hollow echo of someone else’s voice
Calling out to no one this time.
The air is getting thin here
My lungs are burning with the dust.
Of a conversation we never finished.
Of a door that won’t rust open.
It’s not an accident.
It’s a choice.
You pulled the plug.
You chose the floor above me.
Leaving me here in the shaft.
In the dark.
The buzzer sounds.
Sharp. Final.
I don’t press it.
I let the darkness settle.
The elevator stays still.
Forever.
Silence.
