For most of the 16th and 17th centuries the district of Arima was an effective Amerindian Territory and was the home of the Nepuyo people. The name Aripo is indicative of the outstanding linguistic legacy of the First Persons of Trinidad and Tobago. Aripo means ‘griddle for baking cassava bread. The name given to the highest mountain in Trinidad and Tobago suggests a Spanish linguistic influence. El Cerro Del Aripo which translates to ‘Hill of Aripo’, reaches a height of 3,084 ft. and is part of the Aripo Massif. It is located along in the Northern Range on the island of Trinidad and is situated northeast of the town of Arima. The community of Heights of Aripo is nestled at the foothill of this mountain.
