In October 1987, a small team drilled through the stone lid of Khufu's sealed pit at Giza, hoping to capture the air of ancient Egypt. A tiny camera on a rod slid down into the dark, and on the monitor appeared the timbers of a royal boat, buried beside the pharaoh for about 4,500 years.
In this documentary, you'll follow the story from the discovery of the first boat pit in 1954 to the sixteen restored planks now being fitted together at the Grand Egyptian Museum. You'll see how Khufu's first boat was built without a single nail, why the air in the second pit turned out not to be ancient after all, what a 2008 camera revealed about the condition of the cedar, and how nearly 1,700 pieces of wood are being lifted, studied and reassembled in front of visitors. Along the way: Merer's logbook from Wadi al-Jarf, the fourteen boats buried at Abydos, and the debate over whether these ships were ever meant to sail.
