Until now, the Waltair Railway Division — one of the highest revenue-generating divisions — had to depend entirely on the Bhubaneswar-based East Coast Railway Zone for every decision, from running special festival trains to developing basic passenger infrastructure. Any permission, whether for additional trains or facility upgrades, had to be sought from Odisha, while all revenue collected was credited to the East Coast Railway's account. This long-standing dependency is set to change with the Central Government's approval of the new South Coast Railway Zone, headquartered in Visakhapatnam. Spanning approximately 3,584 kilometers, this new zone will give Andhra Pradesh greater administrative autonomy over its railway operations and infrastructure.
