A321 Approaches the WRONG JFK Runway With a Turkish Jet Waiting

A VivaAerobus Airbus A321neo arriving at New York JFK was cleared for an approach and landing on Runway 13L — but during the approach, the aircraft instead lined up with Runway 13R. There was just one major problem: a Turkish Airlines Boeing 787 was already positioned on Runway 13R, waiting for takeoff clearance. With the VivaAerobus aircraft approaching the wrong runway, the situation was recognized and the crew initiated a go-around from roughly 500 feet. After returning and landing safely, the pilots were advised of a possible pilot deviation and given a number to call.
