8 Ancient Civilizations Permanently Erased For Describing The Watchers In 1900, British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans began excavating a low hill on the northern coast of Crete called Kephala. Within weeks, his team had uncovered a palace complex so vast and sophisticated that it forced historians to rewrite the origins of European civilisation entirely. Evans named the culture Minoan, after the legendary King Minos. What he found beneath that hill had been buried for over three thousand years, and some of what it contained has never been explained.
