Here's a video I filmed on November 6th, 2015, of a BNSF coal train passing through the Amtrak station in downtown Ottumwa, Iowa. This train had been waiting for Amtrak on the west side of town as it did its station work (see this video: • Amtrak P40 Diesel Leads the California Zep... ). With Amtrak on its way, the train continues east through town. Once passing the platform, the train goes by a BNSF track inspector, in a hi-rail truck going the opposite direction on Main #1.
Leading this full coal train is BNSF 8463, a newer SD70ACe built in 2014, followed by BNSF 5737, one of the earlier ES44AC units painted in the Heritage II livery, and incorrectly labeled as "AC4400CW"'s. One interesting thing about this train is that there isn't a DPU (Distributed Power Unit) on the end. DPU's provide extra power to a heavy consist, and also help evenly distribute in-train forces for less slack action, and are controlled remotely from the head end. It's fairly unusual for a loaded coal train to not have one today.
YouTube user A. Train also caught this train as it passed through Agency, Iowa, the next town east of Ottumwa. You can watch his video here: • Shiny ACe Leads BNSF Coal Train with No DPU
