Living in Uptown Chicago: a full walking tour of one of the best Chicago neighborhoods for buyers. Five sub-neighborhoods, one video, no fluff. Hey Chicago! Another day, another neighborhood tour — and this Chicago neighborhood walking tour is personal for me. I started my real estate career in Uptown at 20 years old, working out of Buena Park. I've been licensed since 2009, and I still think Uptown is the most misread neighborhood on the North Side. It carried a rough reputation for decades. What's on the ground now is steady reinvestment: a rebuilt Argyle Red Line station, new construction along Broadway and Sheridan, and a food and music scene people cross the city for. WHAT ARE THE SUB-NEIGHBORHOODS OF UPTOWN CHICAGO? This is what most buyers miss. Uptown isn't one place — it's a stack of distinct micro-neighborhoods, and the block you pick changes your price, your building stock, and your daily rhythm. BUENA PARK — the southern edge, Irving Park to Montrose, east of Clark. Tree-lined blocks, Prairie-style homes, the landmarked Hutchinson Street district, and Montrose Beach and Harbor at the end of the walk. CLARENDON PARK — the lower eastern pocket. Lakefront high-rises and dense vintage courtyard buildings, anchored by the Clarendon Park Fieldhouse. SHERIDAN PARK — west of the tracks, centered on Wilson west of Broadway. A National Register historic district of single-family homes and small vintage multi-unit buildings. Often the strongest price-per-square-foot value in Uptown. ASIA ON ARGYLE — once called Little Vietnam, and before that New Chinatown. Chicago's first shared street, the Thursday-night Argyle Night Market each summer, and one of the deepest concentrations of Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian and Chinese food in the Midwest. MARGATE PARK — the upper east side. Lakefront high-rises, vintage courtyards, a short walk to Foster Beach. UPTOWN SQUARE / THE ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT — the Green Mill, the Aragon Ballroom, the Riviera, and the Uptown Theatre: a 1925 Rapp & Rapp movie palace, dark since 1981, still fighting for restoration funding. Worth correcting: Andersonville is technically part of Edgewater, not Uptown — though its Clark Street strip spills a few blocks south of Foster into Uptown's northwest corner. Chicago boundaries are always a little negotiable. We also walk Graceland Cemetery, an accidental arboretum and a who's-who of Chicago architecture: Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, Mies van der Rohe, and Marshall Field. Uptown is one of the more attainable lakefront entries on the North Side — the same Lake Michigan access costs meaningfully more in Lakeview or Lincoln Park. The Uptown Chicago housing market runs the full range: vintage one-bedrooms, mid-market Uptown Chicago condo conversions, gut-rehabbed greystones, and lakefront high-rise units with skyline views. If safety is on your list, don't rely on my read or a comment section — pull the Chicago Police Department's public CLEARMap data for the specific blocks you're considering, then walk them at night. That's the honest answer. NEW: THE CHICAGO BUYER INTAKE FORM This didn't exist when we filmed, so here's the walkthrough. It's a short questionnaire — your timeline, budget, must-haves, and which neighborhoods you're circling. Three minutes. Send it back and we build you a shortlist of specific buildings and blocks that fit, before you ever get on a call. Start here: https://forms.gle/Ue26iUHqtNup5XUM7 LOOKING FOR THE BEST CHICAGO REAL ESTATE AGENT? Interview a few. Ask which sub-neighborhood a vintage courtyard building sits in and why that matters to resale. Ask what a reserve study should tell you in a 1920s building.
