Fed Chair Kevin Warsh says inflation is too high and has been too high for too long. Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin says there will be a reckoning on more than $40 trillion in federal debt, and nobody can say when. Then the Fed raised rates for the first time in about three years. If you live on a VA check, savings in the bank or a paid-off house, here is what that means in plain dollars, and the three jobs your money needs to be doing right now.
What's covered:
What the Fed actually said, translated
Why your VA check always trails prices (one raise a year, paid Dec 31)
The paid-off house and the 0.01% savings account: $25,000 can lose about $750 a year
Job 1: savings that are insured and earning (online banks, credit unions, CDs, Treasury bills)
Job 2: plug the leaks - card interest, the Medicare Part B bite, keeping your VA deposit separate, "rebate" scam calls
Job 3, saved for last: money already yours - disabled veteran property tax exemptions, a rating that fits your health, state tax on military retirement
