The most reproduced image of "Dimetrodon" in old dinosaur books wasn't Dimetrodon at all — it was walking right beside it, carrying the exact same sail, and eating absolutely nothing Dimetrodon ever hunted.
Meet Edaphosaurus: a slow-moving plant-eater that shared its swamp, its era, and — somehow — its most famous feature with one of the deadliest predators of the early Permian. For over a century, paleontologists (and every illustrated dinosaur book since) treated the two as near-twins. They weren't even close relatives. And the sail wasn't even doing the same job.
In this video: why Edaphosaurus's sail is structurally different from Dimetrodon's, what convergent evolution actually means when it happens in the same swamp instead of across oceans, and why two unrelated animals ended up answering two completely different survival questions with the identical silhouette.
