Koto and cello, played slowly, for the last hour before sleep —
designed from the ground up for older listeners. One full hour, so
it outlasts the time it takes most people to fall asleep.
Three design decisions, and the reason for each:
• Built on a Japanese scale, without Western harmony
The melodies use the hirajoshi and in scales — the tunings of the
koto. Underneath, a single sustained low note holds instead of a
chord progression. Traditional Japanese music moves this way: one
melodic line over a drone, with long silences between phrases.
Nothing resolves, so nothing pulls you forward.
• Tuned for older ears
Hearing changes with age, and the highest frequencies fade first.
This music keeps its warmth between 200Hz and 3kHz, where it can
still be heard clearly. The koto is played only in its lowest
register — no bright plucking, no metallic shimmer, no sudden
jumps in volume.
• No water sounds — on purpose
Most night music uses rain, streams or waves. This has none.
Running water is a familiar cue for the body, and at two in the
morning the last thing anyone needs is a reason to get up and
cross a dark room. It was left out for that reason alone.
── How to listen ──
No headphones needed. This was mixed for a small speaker at low
volume — a bedside radio, a TV, a smart speaker. It works in mono
too. The last three minutes fade out slowly, so nothing wakes you
at the end.
One suggestion: turn off autoplay before you settle. Otherwise
something else will start when this finishes.
── What you will not hear ──
No water. No bells, chimes or singing bowls. No taiko or any other
drum. No voices. No sudden dynamics. Each of those was left out
deliberately, and the reasons are the same ones above.
── Please note ──
This music is designed for relaxation and is not a medical
treatment. It does not diagnose, treat, or prevent any disease.
Please consult a healthcare professional for medical concerns.
