In Chapter 51 of The Desire of Ages, “The Light of Life,” Ellen G. White explores Jesus’ powerful declaration, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). Speaking during the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus revealed Himself as the promised Messiah—the divine Light who had guided Israel through the wilderness and now came to illuminate the whole world. Through His life and teachings, Christ revealed the Father's love, offered freedom from sin, and invited all who would follow Him to walk in His light. Yet the religious leaders, blinded by pride and prejudice, refused to recognize the very Savior they had been waiting for. The chapter continues with the remarkable account of Jesus healing a man born blind in John 9. While the Pharisees repeatedly questioned the miracle and accused Jesus of being a sinner, the healed man boldly testified, “One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.” When the religious leaders cast him out, Jesus sought him, revealed Himself as the Son of God, and received the man's worship. His story illustrates the difference between physical and spiritual sight: the man who acknowledged his need received both, while those who insisted they could see remained in darkness. Ellen White compares the receptive soul to a flower turning toward the sun, receiving the light that brings beauty and growth. In the same way, turning toward Christ allows His grace to transform our characters. “The Light of Life” is an original Christian song inspired by The Desire of Ages, Chapter 51 (pages 463–475), and the biblical accounts in John 8 and 9. Through the story of the man born blind, this Scripture-inspired song celebrates Jesus as the Light of the World and reminds us that His truth can free us from sin and transform our hearts. Its central prayer— “O Light of Life, open my eyes”—invites us to lay aside pride, receive Christ's truth, and reflect His love in our lives. May this song encourage you to turn toward the Savior, just as a flower turns toward the sun, and allow His light to make you more like Him. 🎶 If this song blessed you, we'd love to hear what spoke to you most.
