What is measured
• Metric: career Grand Slam singles titles — the four majors, added up year by year
• Which tournaments count: Wimbledon from 1877, the US Championships and US Open from 1881, the Australian from 1905 and Roland-Garros from 1925, the year it opened to international players. The French events of 1891-1924 and the wartime Tournoi de France of 1941-1945 were closed to foreigners and are not majors
• Period: the chart runs from 1925, the first year with the four modern majors, and every earlier title is already counted in the totals
• Amateur era: from 1927 to 1967, players who turned professional were banned from these events. Their professional titles are not counted by any official record, and neither are the years they lost
• Nothing here is estimated or interpolated: every value is a count of titles
