May 8th, 1902. After two weeks of ash, boiling mudflows and official reassurances that the city was safe, Mount Pelée exploded above Saint-Pierre, Martinique. In less than two minutes, a glowing cloud of superheated gas and ash wiped out a city of nearly 28,000 people, leaving only a handful of survivors. It remains the deadliest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. In this video, you'll discover the full story of the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée: the warning signs that were ignored, the election and the official commission that told people to stay, the deadly mudflow that buried the Guérin sugar works, and the moment the "Paris of the Caribbean" vanished. You'll meet the few who survived, including the prisoner Louis-Auguste Cyparis, saved by the walls of his cell, and Captain Edward Freeman, who steered his burning ship out of the harbour. And you'll learn how this disaster gave the world the term "nuée ardente" and changed how we understand volcanoes forever.
