Waverunner Steering Cable #3 - What the #@?

When we had the request to look at a steering issue on a 2015 Yamaha FXHO that was already on it's 2nd steering cable, we couldn't resist a little road trip to investigate. It's a bit of a drive so we took the MAN HX Camper so we had our home on wheels and enough room for all the tools. We wondered if the 2nd cable might have been an aftermarket option and simply not up to the task. This owner and his mates do more hours in one year than most people do in 10 years. But it was indeed a genuine OEM cable which had seized up. It turns out there had been an minor issue at installation causing the small rubber seal at the end of the cable to shift and allow water into the cable inner. Salt water. And salt water causes rapid problems. When we take the cable apart you can see the corrosion from the back end up. We had the fortune of having a good, low hour, used OEM cable in stock which we installed, making sure the seal was in the correct location.
