In one Tamil retelling of the Ramayana, Ravana never actually touches Sita during her abduction—he excavates and carries the entire hermitage instead. In this same text, a grieving, furious Rama is directly admonished by Jatayu for his own carelessness — something that happens nowhere else across the entire Ramayana tradition. This is Kamba Ramayanam, composed by the 12th-century Tamil poet Kambar, a work so influential that scholars consider it to hold greater sway over Southeast Asia's Ramayana tradition than even Valmiki's own original Sanskrit text.
