Three of them are gone. Kathryn Apanowicz, the blunt Yorkshire nurse and partner of Richard Whiteley, died in March 2025 aged 64 after a long illness. Kate Saunders became an award-winning novelist and died of cancer in 2023 at 62. Al Hunter Ashton wrote some of the biggest nights in EastEnders history and died of heart failure in 2007, aged just 49.
