Hakone is a popular destination, so as you can see from this video, it is especially crowded on holidays. It takes time to wait for your turn to buy a ticket if you don’t have HAKONE FREEPASS. It's a good deal if you go around Hakone. If you plan to stay in Hakone, you had better to buy it. This is my honest impression. Just one thing to keep in mind: the HAKONE FREEPASS covers the regular train fare from Shinjuku, but the Romancecar requires an additional limited express fare. So, if you want to take the Romancecar, don’t forget to purchase the limited express ticket separately. Food and Drinks on the Romancecar Once you pass through the ticket gates at Shinjuku Station to board the Romancecar, you won’t find any shops inside the gated area. If you plan to have breakfast or lunch on board, I recommend buying your favorite food before arriving at Shinjuku Station. There used to be a great onigiri (rice ball) shop and convenience stores just outside the ticket gates, but they are no longer there due to ongoing station renovation work. Eating on trains is generally discouraged on ordinary commuter trains in Japan. However, you can comfortably enjoy a bento or other food on the Romancecar. Eating a packed meal while traveling on a long-distance train is part of Japanese railway culture, and the Romancecar is a great place to enjoy this experience. Hakone is a popular destination among international visitors and can be very crowded throughout the year. As you can see in this video, it is possible to complete the Hakone loop in a day. However, a day trip doesn’t leave you much time to explore at a relaxed pace or enjoy a meal along the way. I recommend staying overnight in Hakone so you can take your time and enjoy the experience. (Oct. 2026) /// Itinerary /// I got on Romancecar at Shinjuku station with HAKONE FREEPASS, 8am on Sunday. Transfer many local trains with HAKONE FREEPASS, and visit Owakudani, Lake Ashi. Weather is cloudy, so can’t see Mt. fuji. It was a tight schedule, but satisfied. Visiting Hakone on a Rainy Day I wouldn’t recommend a day trip to Hakone if heavy rain is forecast. You’ll be very unlikely to see Mt. Fuji, and waiting in long, crowded queues at the pirate ship boarding area can be a miserable experience in the rain. If your plans are flexible and you can cancel your trip, this could be a good opportunity to explore some lesser-known attractions closer to Tokyo.
