Avatar Aang was the hero of all four nations. He defeated the fire lord who had laid siege to the world for 100 years, took away his bending, and promised peace for the world from then on... Skip ahead 70 years and the world is totally recongisable, with cars, telegraph machines and a brand new fifth nation where benders from all of the four nations could live together in harmony... So how did we get there? What happened in the 70 year gap between avatar the last airbender and the legend of korra? Hit that subscribe button and im going to break down every single story in that period. The Missing Seventy Years When the original series ended, Ozai had lost his bending and Zuko was sitting on the throne of the Fire Nation. By the time Korra shows up in 170 AG there are cars on the streets, radios in people's homes and a huge city called Republic City that didn't exist when Aang was a kid. Everything in between has been pieced together across the Dark Horse comics, the flashbacks in Korra and the animated Aang movie that landed on Paramount Plus in July 2026, along with its official novel, since the other Avatar novels are all set centuries earlier. So today we're putting all of it in order, from the first shaky months of peace to the night a secret society came to steal the new Avatar. The Promise That Nearly Restarted the War The first crisis hit almost immediately. Aang, Zuko and Earth King Kuei launched the Harmony Restoration Movement, a plan to move every Fire Nation colony out of the Earth Kingdom and give the land back. On paper that sounded like justice, but places like Yu Dao, the oldest colony of them all, had been home to Fire Nation families for generations, and many had married Earth Kingdom locals and raised kids who belonged to both nations. Zuko had already made Aang swear something terrible in private, that if he ever started turning into his father, Aang would end him. Then an assassin from Yu Dao came after him, Zuko started quietly visiting Ozai in prison for advice, and he ended up backing the colonists against the Earth King. Aang confronted him in the Avatar State and came terrifyingly close to keeping that promise before he pulled himself back. With two armies staring each other down outside Yu Dao, the standoff ended when Aang realised the colonies had grown into something new, a place where both nations lived as one people. That idea became the seed of the United Republic of Nations. Along the way Toph opened a metalbending academy with her first handful of students, and a club of Aang's biggest fans started studying Air Nomad culture, which is where the Air Acolytes come from.
